Important facts and dates in African American history 1619: The first enslaved Africans are brought to the British colonies in North America. 1791: The Haitian Revolution begins, led by Toussaint L'Ouverture, which results in the abolition of slavery on the island of Haiti. 1857: The Dred Scott v.
